Hedy Lamarr  (9 November, 1914 – 19 January, 2000 )
By the 1940’s, both the Nazis and the Allied forces were using single-frequency radio-controlled technology. The problem was that torpedoes were guided toward their targets by radio, and radio frequencies could be jammed.  Eventually the enemy would find the frequency used and jam the control signal by putting out a strong noise signal on the same frequency.
In 1942 at the height of her fame as an actress, Hedy Lamarr  developed a new kind of communications system that couldn't be “jammed”; a system that would allow torpedoes and guided bombs to reach their targets.  It was a way of encoding a message across a broad area of the wireless spectrum. If one part of the spectrum was jammed, the message would still get through on one of the other frequencies being used. The transmitter on a ship and receiver in the torpedo would synchronously hop from one frequency to another; ie, "frequency-hopping"  through 88 random frequencies – the same as the number of keys on a piano. The jammer could try to jam all frequencies, but that would require too much equipment and power.
Because FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) is a wireless technology that spreads its signal over rapidly hopping radio frequencies, it is highly resistant to interference and is difficult to intercept. Interference at a specific frequency only affects the transmission during that extremely short interval, making FHSS inherently cybersecure.
Hedy Lamarr and musician George Antheil were recognized for their scientific contributions; in 1997 they were awarded the Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award as well as the BULBIE Gnass Spirit of Achievement Bronze Award. The BULBIE is considered the Oscar of the inventing world, and Lamarr is the first woman to have won it.
Every November 9, World Inventor's Day is celebrated in honour of Hedy Lamarr coinciding with the date of her birth.  Google doodle celebrated her 101 birthday  on 9 Nov 2015.

Just a teenager, when María del Carmen started in amateur radio. In her photo, she is in a mobile radio unit in the 1950s
Happy 81st Birthday Mari. doyenne of  Cuban women radio amateurs
CO6MQ MARIA  DEL  CARMEN (MARY) RUIZ PEREZ

Santa Clara, VC Cuba
Maria del Carmen Ruiz Perez (CO6MQ). A Cuban radio amateur  was born in Remedios on November 2, 1941. She is the oldest woman in the Federation of Radio Amateurs of Cuba (FRC) and founder of this organization. She began her  radio activity in the 1950s. She obtained her first license on January 20, 1960 and belongs to the Radio Club of Santa Clara, Villa Clara province.
In Cuba, María del Carmen Ruíz Pérez is the doyenne of women radio amateurs. Her pleasant voice has crossed the radio waves since 1955, This Cuban radio amateur active with the longest time in the association, has plenty of experiences to tell.
At just 13 years of age, she was already skilfully manipulating her  father's equipment, from whom she inherited the “ radia gene ” . “Everyone knew me. Sometimes, instead of sending the confirmation card of the communication to my father (QSL), they sent it to me”, recalls smiling Mari, as everyone calls her.
In those  years it was not common for a female voice to cross the ether, so an inspector quickly showed up at the house to sanction her  father, since an unauthorized lady was practically the owner of the station. “When my mother looked for me, that man could not believe that it was I who was speaking on the radio. It seems that the inspector liked me and we started talking. When I turned 14,  he was the one who examined me.
Only memories and yellowish photos remain from those times.  “Some people don't understand it –says María del Carmen– but amateur radio has contributed a lot to my life. Presently she becomes quite depressed at times because  her HF radio (equipment for international communications) has been broken for some time and she is unable to stay in contact with her friends from all over the world.
María del Carmen is as addicted to her radio as young people are to 'social media', except she 'hears' the voices of her friends, several of whom she has met in person. She met several on-air friends during a trip  to the Dominican Republic  and also to Florida. “To be a radio amateur is to have a big family”.
Acquiring radio equipment in Cuba is difficult, where currently many operators use 'antique' radios.
María  – I don't want any more decorations, I want them to fix my equipment”. The oldest radio amateur in Cuba has been away from the international airwaves for several years because of a part that she has not been able to find for her HF radio. She keeps it carefully covered to protect it from the dust.   “The problem is that in Cuba there is no workshop that fixes this equipment – she continues – nor a store that sells it or the parts”.
This  veteran of radio  has lived most of her life involved in the world of radio and  asserts that when a female voice crosses the ether, all ears listen. “In international bands they immediately give way to you, perhaps out of curiosity. There is a lot of radio chivalry. Worldwide, I appreciate that women are not as abundant as in our country.”

1st  woman to lead the UN agency ITU and the third radio amateur.
KD2JTX   Doreen T Bogdan-Martin  -   ITU Secretary-General
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies, announced the election of Doreen Bogdan-Martin, who will assume office on January 1, 2023.
She will be the first woman to lead the  ITU in it’s 157-year history. and  and the third radio amateur.  She will be taking the reins of the oldest UN agency, which is responsible for many facets of international communications. Originally founded in 1865 to manage the first international telegraph networks, the ITU now has an important role in facilitating the use of radio, satellite and the internet.
The election took place Thursday 29 September, in Bucharest, Romania. The SG is elected every four years by a majority-rule, secret ballot process.

KD2JTX  Doreen T Bogdan-Martin is a member of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and  in May 2019 she was inducted into the CQ Hall of Fame when she became Director of the  ITU's Telecommunication Development bureau, She was the first woman ever to hold a senior elected position in the ITU.  (yl.beam #72)
Doreen Bogdan-Martin, KD2JTX, born in 1966 in Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA,  graduated from American University with a Master’s in International Communications Policy, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware. She has a postgraduate certification in Strategies for Leadership from the Institute for Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland, and is certified in Responsibility and Ethics by the United Nations Leaders Program.
Bogdan-Martin is married and has two daughters and two sons. She is fluent in English, French and Spanish. She is an active Amateur Radio operator holding callsign KD2JTX and, in 2014, arranged for school students in Switzerland to talk live with astronauts in orbit through Amateur Radio on the International Space Station.

ITU Background
First called the International Telegraph Union, the ITU was formed in 1865, 15 years before the invention of the radio, when European states got together to regulate communications across borders.  The development of the telegraph in the early 19th century changed the way people communicated on the local and international levels.  In 1942, the ITU became part of the wider United Nations family. Membership of  ITU is open to all member states of the United Nations.

Amateur Radio is represented by the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) in ITU.
ITU divides the world into three regions for the purposes of managing the global radio spectrum and allocates call sign prefixes for radio and television stations of all types. ITU zones are  used in Ham Radio contests or award-hunting
In 2022 the ITU’s own ham radio station celebrates 60 years on air at the headquarters of the ITU in Geneva, Switzerland. Using  callsign 4U1ITU. it started broadcasting on 10 June 1962.  4U1ITU is recognized as a unique “country” in the ham radio community

JOTA - Jamboree on the Air.    Oct 14 – 16, 2022
Could you advertise JOTA - Jamboree on the Air. It is for Scouts and Guides all over the world to try and contact each other. They need radio hams to help them to do it.

It is the weekend 14/15/16th October. We will be running a station near Ludlow in Shropshire (UK) for the local scouts. In the past we have spoken to stations in Europe and the US. It’s also a great way of introducing radio to the younger generation. We have had a number of Scouts go for their licence after attending JOTA.

JOTA will be 65 years old and  JOTI 26 years old!! 🎂
Together they make #JOTAJOTI, the world's largest and most accessible Scouting event

Meerkats are social animals that live in large groups throughout southern Africa.. They belong to the mongoose family and are a matriarchal society. You may recognise them from our facebook logo?

Meerkats are also the youngest Branch of the S African Scout Programme - Meerkats, Cubs, Guides & Scouts. Launched in 2019 the Meerkat motto is 'Stand Tall'.

In 2012 the 1st Randburg Meerkats (South African Scout group) waved goodbye to 3 little meerkats (soft toys) and sent them off on their adventures (aka The Meandering Meerkats). Mossie went to the UK, Missy to Canada and  Mischief  to Australia.

Do you think  YL groups should have a mascot that they could exchange at International Meets?

Michelle VK2AYL at the controls of the helicopter

ALARA
Michelle VK2AYL, has agreed to become the new President of ALARA, below she tells us about herself.

My interest in amateur radio started at a young age through my family and participation in JOTA with my Girl Guide unit. Since obtaining my Foundation Amateur Radio Licence in 2006 my involvement with radio has stretched across many aspects of my life. I enjoy participating in field based amateur radio contests and joining in regular Scout, ALARA and Pilot nets on Echolink. I am the Girl Guides Australia National JOTA/JOTI Coordinator where I develop activities to introduce the Girl Guides to amateur radio and technology. Each year I set up a JOTA station, VK2GGZ, for my own Girl Guide unit and the other Scouts and Girl Guides in the surrounding areas. Radio has provided me, and the Girl Guides, a great opportunity to communicate and make friends with others particularly during recent times when travel and social activities have been limited.

I work as an Environmental Scientist where I prepare environmental impact assessments for major infrastructure projects. I enjoy being outdoors and traveling and have been fortunate to have participated in projects researching species such as rhinos in Kenya, leopards  and baboons in South Africa, jaguars in Brazil and various other mammals in Canada. These activities have taken me to many remote locations where phone reception is not available and radio is used for both communications and wildlife tracking activities.

My other passion is aviation. I hold an aeroplane private pilots licence and have enjoyed continuing to learn new flying skills including seaplane, skiplane, aerobatics, tail-wheel and bush flying. I have recently started my helicopter pilot training and am looking forward to the new adventures I will be able to undertake once I obtain my helicopter licence.

I am excited to have been elected as the ALARA president and look forward to encouraging more young people, particularly women, to actively participate in amateur radio.

YU3AWA Marija Kostić of Serbia from the Vatican as HV0A
17th September 2022, Saturday  08:00 UTC to 13:00 UTC., SSB
The only YL in more than 20 years that has operated  from the Vatican City.

* HV0A report*** 24 Sept 2022

Thanks to the graciousness of Franceso, IK0FVC, I (Marija YU3AWA) had the rare opportunity to be a guest operator at the Vatican amateur radio station, HV0A. Francesco opened some completely new doors for me in the hobby.  Accompanying me was my mentor, teacher, and friend Alex, YT3H.

Plans for this activation began in the Spring of 2021 but travel was impossible as the borders to most countries were closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Finally after almost a year and a half, we were able to announce with certainty that YL Marija, YU3AWA, will be QRV and on the air from HV0A on September 17, 2022.

From the moment I stepped foot into the HV0A building, I was very excited and full of adrenaline, However I quickly became very comfortable and relaxed. Thanks to the hospitality of Francesco and being such a graciJOTA - Jamboree on the Air.    Oct 14 – 16, 2022ous host, I could feel his warm friendly welcome. Following a short conversation and explanation of the equipment at the station, Francesco handed me the headphones and said to me Marija, feel free to start operating when you are ready! I was elated since this was the opportunity I was waiting for so long and finally my dream was coming true.

I started my operation on 40 meters since that was the best band at 07:40 UTC when I logged my first QSO and the upper HF bands were not open yet. Of course at that hour there were many Italian stations on 40 meters. Imagine what a huge pileup this was my first time operating split frequency and it worked out extremely well.

I moved to 20 meters continuing my split frequency operation. This was heaven since there was much less QRM and noise and the call signs were much easier to discern and copy.

As time went by more and more stations from outside of Europe, mainly North America, were calling and I logged hundreds of DX QSOs. More than 3 hours passed without me stopping

Eventually after 4 hours propagation changed and I handed the station over to top notch CW operator Alex, YT3H. Alex also operated split frequency in the CW portion of 17 meters.

I was having lunch while I enjoyed watching Alex with his speed and proficiency handling the huge CW pileup. We continued to make additionALARAal DX contacts on SSB. In our 7 hours and 20 minutes a total of 964 QSOs were logged. 707 on SSB and 257 on CW. The QSO rate was 2.22 QSOs per minute.

We had over 150 spots on the DX cluster which shows the tremendous amount of interest the DX community had following us and trying to work us. Vatican City ranks number 111 on the DXCC most wanted list.

I can’t tell you how many emails and messages I’ve received since returning to Serbia. The support, encouragement, and positive comments from so many people, and the wonderful messages on how we handled the pileups were very gratifying.

These are fantastic memories I will have for the rest of my life.
88 - YU3AWA Marija

Postscript - IK0FVC   Francesco Valsecchi : He dedicates his free time working with people to obtain donations, making good deals, and whatever it takes to help fund the HV0A operation and keep the station on the air. The funds he receives for paper QSL card requests is minimal, just to cover the cost of the cards and rising postage costs.

Jeanne Socrates, VE0JS/MM / KC2IOV,  SV Nereida
Amateur Radio Helps Disabled Sailboat to Port     15/9/2022

On September 7, 2022, Jeanne (Jan) Socrates, VE0JS/MM / KC2IOV, and her sailboat, the SV Nereida, set sail from Cape Flattery, the north-western most point of the contiguous US. She was on her way to visit friends in San Francisco, California, but 2 days of 35 knot winds and storms left her sailboat disabled and her onboard radio equipment marginally operational. Amateur operators in New Mexico, California, and Canada, and members of  'Group  7.155' heard her requests for assistance.

Gil Gray, N2GG, was able to contact Socrates on 40 meters. "Her power was extremely low, and she was unable to communicate on 14.300 MHz to notify the monitoring group on that frequency," said Gray. "She needed help with wind and sea conditions, and tidal data for San Francisco Bay," he added.

Low-power output on the HF radio made it very difficult to get Q5 copy, which would typically be Q2 or Q3. With the help of several software-defined radio (SDR) operators in Utah, California, and Maui, Hawaii, they were able to glean enough copy to understand her situation and answer questions for her navigation.

Gray; Jonathan Ayers, AI6NA, and Edwin E. Jenkins, K6EXY, are all experienced sailors. They were able to make periodic contact with Socrates and give her updated wind reports. Their last contact was on Monday, September 12, at 11:00 AM (MSDT). By this time, Socrates was sailing with only the forward sail on her 38-foot sloop. Fortunately, a "following wind" kept her moving without a mainsail. As she approached the Golden Gate Bridge, Socrates was able to use the tidal information passed on by amateur radio operators to make it safely to Berkeley Marina in San Francisco Bay.

"I wouldn't call it a rescue," said Socrates, "just good amateur radio assistance -- and I'm grateful for their help."

Socrates is 81 years old and the oldest person to have ever sailed around the world unassisted. Once her sailboat is repaired, she will sail again, not for records, but for the enjoyment of sailing the high seas.

World Space Week 2022, Oct 4 -10

Sharon Hagle founded SpaceKids Global™ in 2015, with the goal of bringing space to children everywhere. SpaceKids Global is on a mission to ensure every child is ready to enter the space age. Astronaut, Sharon Hagle  completed her flight on Blue Origin's New Shepard NS-20 launched on March 31, 2022.

 June 14, 2022 SpaceKids Blog-post:

In 1962, a University of Connecticut student wrote a letter to NASA, offering to participate on a space mission. The Public Information Director responded in writing, letting Miss Kelly know that NASA has "no existing program concerning women astronauts nor do we contemplate any such plan."

Calling Miss Kelly?

Kerry Sanders of NBC reached out to SpaceKids to do a story to help us find her.  Do you know who she is? Can you help us find her? She would be in her late 70's, and we are looking for friends or family who will share her life story with us. Miss Kelly was ahead of her time, and we salute her courage to try to open the doors for women in space.

Please email info@spacekids.global  if you can provide any information.   https://www.spacekids.global/

(1962 - 2022) 60 years on – Where are we Now?

The first woman in space was a Soviet cosmonaut. Valentina Tereshkova on June 16, 1963. (A year after Miss Kelly's letter)

1978 -16 years later : NASA opened the space program to female applicants, in response to the new anti-discrimination laws of the time.

1982 - 20 years on: The second woman to go into space was cosmonaut: Svetlana Savitskaya, who became the first woman to fly to space twice on July 25, 1984, and the first woman to walk in space.

1983:  Sally Ride became the first female U.S. astronaut to go into space, June 18,  third woman overall.

2008 - 46 years later: NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson (KC5ZTD) was the first female ISS Commander, starting April 2008, She holds the U.S. record for cumulative time in space – 665 days. She has tied the record for the most space-walks for any U.S. astronaut and holds the record for the most spacewalk time for female space travelers.

60 years later: 29 Sept 2022 Samantha Cristoforetti, IZ0UDF,officially became the first European woman commander of the International Space Station (ISS).

Ada Lovelace Day 11 October.
Ada Lovelace.  (10 Dec. 1815 - 27 Nov. 1852)

An English mathematician and writer, she was one of the world’s first computer programmers, and one of the first to see computers as more than just a machine for doing sums. In 1842 she wrote what is now recognized as the first computer programmes.

Ada Lovelace's work went widely unrecognized until the 1950s, when her papers were republished,

Adele Slier Tyler (ZS5APT)  · 27 Sept 2022

For the Spring ZS SOTA day - 24 September 2022 (Heritage day) We got permission to activate ZS/WC-152 Anyskop in the Ceres district. We arrived on the farm at 08:45 and after chatting to the owner - Lorraine, we started the 4x4 route to the summit. Proteas lined the route and the view of the surrounding mountains & cliffs was spectacular, the 4x4 route goes up to the activation zone, but we enjoy hiking the last 750m up to the summit, the views at the top were also amazing. Lorraine said that on a clear day you can see Table Mountain from the summit, but it was very hazy and overcast. We set up our station and our first contact was with Christi ZS4CGR & his XYL Marie ZS4MG who were activating a few HOTA (Heritage on the Air) points. In total we made 21 contacts, S2S contacts with Vaughan ZS2VR activating ZS/EL-020, Roy ZS3RW/1 & Esmé ZS3EW/1 activating ZS/WC-929 and Philip ZS6FY activating ZS/MP-069, a contact with Jacques ZS4WW who was activating ZSFF-0427 and Tjaart ZS3DR who was also activating a HOTA. We had a lot of fun and took photos of the beautiful flowers & rocks on the summit. Lorraine suggested that once we come down from the summit we must visit their orchard to see the nectarine trees and flowers thALARAat were in full bloom, but we came down from the summit too late to go and look, she was so sweet she sent me photos, which I have included.

Ja-No-Well-Fine
Women's Day is celebrated on 9th August in South Africa and when I came across a monument to the “koeksister” - ubiquitously South African – I thought it might be a cross-cultural symbol that we could all support (food is an International language!). Hope to meet you on air on Women's Day and be sure to have a few koeksisters ready with your coffee. 33 Editor ZS5YH Heather

The Koeksister Monument
Situated in the Northern Cape, about 160km south of Kimberley, Orania is a small town located on the banks of the Orange River and a stronghold for Afrikaans culture. The Koeksister Monument, erected in 2003, celebrates the women who baked and sold koeksisters, a syrupy sweet Afrikaner delicacy, to collect money for charity and is one of the town's tourist attractions.
The monument, a Giant Koeksister, is the brainchild of Orania’s Kaalvoet women’s organisation and named for Susanna Smit, who said she would rather walk barefoot (kaalvoet) over the Drakensberg (ridge of mountains) than suffer under British rule in Natal (mid 1840s). Susanna Smit (1798-1863) considered a symbol of resistance to oppression.
Koeksister is believed to have originated from a recipe brought to the Cape by Dutch settlers in the 17th century.

Strelitzia, aka the crane flower, bird of paradise, is indigenous to South Africa and particularly in the area where Vi Cruickshanks, ZS2BR lived, (below) extract from May 1968 Radio ZS Yls Corner: . Irvine Green ZS6BPE

Vi Cruickshanks, ZS2BR, South Africa's Early Yls

Vi Cruickshanks, ZS2BR, obtained her ticket on the 8th November, 1937. She was also well received by the OM fraternity, and they admired her muchly for her flawless C.W. Vi was a telegraphist for nine years, so she was extremely lucky to have had such good training, which prepared her so well for the hobby of Amateur Radio.
Vi has done her share of listening also, which helped her with the procedure. She also felt a little shy at the beginning, but it did not take her long to get into her stride.
At the time when Vi first came on the 40 and 20 metre bands, she had a young daughter. Her life was a busy one, as she was also occupied with Social work.
During the war, ZS2BR helped to give the W.A.A.F. Signals some tuition in Port Elizabeth for a while. She also worked in the Post Office for a further three years, to help to alleviate the staff position during 1939 - 1945.
Although being occupied with her pursuits, Vi has found time to serve on the Council of the S.A. Women’s Radio Club, and on the committee of the Port Elizabeth Branch of the S.A. Radio League.
As far as her personality is con
cerned, Vi is interested in people, and she has a nice sense of humour. She is a person who perseveres, and she shows the same unflagging enthusiasm for all the hobbies and social work she has embraced.
Her present Rig is the 6C4 V.F.O. 6C4 doublers driving a single 807, running 70 watts. The Modulator consists of a pair of 6L6s, Class AB 1. The RX is the 1155A. with the RF 24. The antennae are folded dipoles.
The S.P.C.A. has been Vi’s greatest interest for many years, and she is always working for this cause. She is on the Executive Committee, and also serves on the Animals Home Management Committee.
Now Vi and her OM Ab, are the grandparents of three, and their daughter lives in Port Elizabeth.
ZS2BR Mrs. V. Cruickshanks, of Port Elizabeth appeared in the SARL callbooks from 1950 - 1973.

ILLW - International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend
on track for the 25th year over weekend August 20 – 21, 2022
the objective is to have fun and at the same time highlight lighthouses that suffer from lack of care and maintenance. Showing the public all about amateur radio is a side benefit.
10 South African lighthouses have been registered with inland clubs ZS3VDK (Van Der Kloof) and ZS6WR (West Rand) members travelling to the coast to activate three lighthouses.

VE3DTW-Ethel Williamson on her 100th Birthday.
VE3DTW. Williamson, Ethel. [ March 21,1907 – October 29th 2010 ] age 104
Born in England in 1907, Ethel (age 4) immigrated to St Catharines with her family in 1911.
When husband Cyril enlisted to serve in the RCAF in World War II, Ethel spent 5 years raising her sons and volunteering at the Red Cross and Air Force Canteen.
After having served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War, Cyril Williamson was looking for secure employment to support his wife Ethel and their two sons. One evening in September 1945, Cy looked up from the evening paper and asked Ethel, “How would you like to live in a lighthouse?”
He explained that there would be a lot of competition for jobs now, and his experience with radios during the war would be a good fit for the position. Of the eight men who applied, Cy ranked first, and the family moved to the lighthouse in time to open it for the shipping season on April 1, 1946.
Cy Williamson VE3TW had been a big part of the Radar section run by the RAF during WW 2.
Cyril and Ethel became lighthouse keepers at Port Weller (Ontario) at the north entrance to the Welland Canal and maintained the light for the next 25 years.

As Ethel Williamson recalls, she was a little puzzled by the radio at first. "To me, it just meant a lot of noise," she said. She said her determination to learn grew after overhearing Cyril talking on the radio with the wife of a man in Barbados, who sounded like an attractive young woman. "I thought 'who is she?'" "I thought 'maybe I can, too.' That was how I got involved with it."
Ethel earned her Amateur Radio License, VE3DTW and began her long-standing membership with the Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio Club. Ethel was reportedly one of the first women in Canada to earn her license, and during her years at the lighthouse, she contacted people from over 250 countries. Following the war, many Canadian servicemen were still stationed overseas, and Ethel was often contacted to see if she could relay a message to their families. “Sometimes I wrote to the relatives making a date for them to come to the lighthouse at a certain time. It was the most rewarding time of my life."

Ethel had a lot of stories to tell about that time. There was enough material, and Williamson was such a good story-teller that she wrote a book, A Light on the Seaway, which was published in 1972. Ethel shares many humorous stories from their life on Welland Canal and chronicles the opening of St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959, when large "salties" (ocean going ships) began passing right outside their front door. Many people that Ethel befriended via radio paid a visit to the station.

Ethel Williamson marked her 100th birthday March 21, 2007, attending a lunch in her honour hosted by the Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio Club.; she was a member of the Trilliums, the Canadian Ham Radio Club for ladies (fore-runner of CLARA).
When the Welland branch of the Handy Ham Amateur Radio Club of Canada heard about a 102 year old ham who had been QRT for the past two decades they decided to help Ethel. The organization offered to set up a radio for her at Niagara Ina Grafton Gage Village long-term-care home so she could get back on the air. on Monday, January 4th. 2010 she made her first QSO with a station in Melbourne, Australia, via a local repeater tied to VK land using IRLP. Thanks to ham radio her voice was, once again, heard, worldwide.
Ethel passed away peacefully on October 29th 2010, in her 104th year at Niagara Ina Grafton Gage Village.
Her years of service were recognized in 2002, when she was awarded a Queen’s Jubilee Medal.
At the age of ninety-eight, she had the honour of christening the new Canadian Coast Guard vessel Cape Storm at the Port Weller Coast Guard Station. Ethel was predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years Cyril.

Port Weller Lighthouse, St. Catharines, Ontario
Port Weller marks the northern entrance of the Welland Canal, which links Lake Ontario with Lake Erie, allowing vessels to bypass the Niagara River and Falls; opening all of the Great Lakes to outside shipping.
In August 1921, a wooden pole was erected at the outer end of the west embankment at Port Weller, and on it were mounted a cluster of fixed white electric lights and an electrically-operated fog bell. A concrete mast replaced the wooden pole in 1925.
The pierhead light and bell served alone until 1931, when a combination keeper’s dwelling and generator building was built along with a four-section, skeletal lighthouse. Consistent with the architecture of the time, the keeper’s dwelling was built in an Art Deco style. In 1934, an automatic radio-beacon was established at Port Weller.

The life of keeper Cyril Williamson and his family is chronicled in Ethel Williamson's A Light on the Seaway. The Williamsons lived at the station for 25 years from 1946 until the main light was extinguished. The main light was demolished in 1971.
The lighthouse and the fog horn building illustrate the importance of navigational aids to the safe usage of the Welland Canal. The Port Weller lighthouse station, as a result of the interest of lighthouse keeper Cyril Williamson and his wife Ethel in ham radio, achieved international recognition as an important navigational aid on the Welland Canal.
The Saint Lawrence Seaway
Corporation established a set of range lights farther inland at Port Weller in 1969, and the Port Weller Main Lighthouse was discontinued.
Both the 1953 and 1931 residences now serve as the Port Weller Search and Rescue Station for the Canadian Coast Guard.

South African Yls Anniversary month of June
Our 1st letter was sent June 2011 and 11 years on, we reflect and remember the women radio pioneers and operators, on whose shoulders we stand today.

The SAWRC (South African Women’s Radio Club) was founded on 2 June 1952; the only YL Club in the Southern hemisphere. That means they would have celebrated their 70th platinum anniversary in 2022! Founding members, now all SK (Silent Key) were: ZS2AA Iris Hayes (President); ZS5KG Muriel Neill (Vice-President);  ZS6KK Marie Cormack and ZS6GH Diana Green (Joint Secretaries). Diana Green also edited their magazine YL Beam. They had their own magazine,"YL Beam", which regularly comprised over 18 pages, and even had a Christmas edition of 30 pages.
They started with 33 members and by end of 1952 they had 71. The club was very active in the 1950's and 60's with over 120 YL members.

Recall & Remember  - Ruth Boatwright ZS2QK (ex ZS5QK)
Ruth moved to the Garden Route Area after her husband Roger ZS5EW became silent key.
Ruth was blind. (A white stick operator) She was active on HF and VHF. Many will remember her cheerful voice on the Eastern Cape Repeater Network and for her positive outlook on many aspects of life. Well known on the air she would always be there to answer your call.
Ruth had a Kenwood TS120S Radio with no fancy voice synthesizer. She used a piece of press-stick (reusable putty-adhesive)  to find her way around the HF frequencies. At times the HF radio and antenna would not function properly. Roger (ex ZS1J) would come to Ruth's aid by fixing her radio and antenna free of charge. Her two meter radio also gave trouble and she received a donation radio from a radio amateur that kept her on the air.
Ruth was a regular on the WACRAL group every Saturday morning. She never missed a call in, even if late. ( World Association of Christian Amateurs and Listeners)
Ruth moved from the Wilderness to a retirement village in George and then during February 2012, it is  believed she  moved back to ZS5- KZN land. Her licence lapsed in 2017 - presumably when she went into a Retirement centre before she became silent key. We will remember her for "All good things come to those who are willing to wait!!"

During  Feb 2017 ZS6BOX Cliff  had a long chat with her in a retirement-home in Port Shepstone, KZN.

One of the highlights was  S2S between two Arctic summits from XYL  JW5MUA/LA5MUA  Solveig, since she lives in Longyearbyen she uses the callsign JW5MUA.

Svalbard

Approximately 60% of the archipelago is covered with glaciers, and the islands feature many mountains and fjords. As Svalbard is north of the Arctic Circle, it experiences midnight sun in summer and polar night in winter.

Young Argentines Lead the Way
LU1NSL Sofia  represents Santiago on Women's Day 2022
The Radioclub of La Rioja LU1SF, one of the most active in the country, organizes the "certificate" for International Women's Day, where Argentine radio amateurs, representing their provinces,  take over the radio air.
Santiago del Estero, a province in the north of Argentina, was represented by Sofía Loray, 12 years old,  on Women's Day who operated an 'award' station, granting contacts to other participating stations.
Sofía Loray (LU1NSL), who has been a radio amateur since she was 10 years old, obtained her callsign during the pandemic, after completing her technical, theoretical and practical training at the Radioclub Santiago del Estero LU1NF, where she demonstrated her radio operation skills in the bands of HF.
Radio amateurs agree on Sofia's ease, good manners and operating skills, which is why she represented Santiago in this event.
In dialogue with 'Nuevo Diario', her father, Ernesto Loray (LU6NHD), said: “She has the habit of correctly using the international radio alphabet; and when she asks for the microphone to operate, she always asks me to leave her a while longer. It is a pride to know that she represents another generation of the family”.
Radioclub Santiago del Estero, Argentina - 4 new yls 12/Sept 2020
The Radioclub Santiago del Estero LU1NF keeps alive and growing during the Covid pandemic, where it continued to provide training to future radio amateurs; and on this occasion, Enacom issued 11 new licenses to a group of people from Santiago, including 4 girls between 10 and 14 years old. This unprecedented participation of 4 girls stands out, ages 10 to 14 years old , surprised the national community of radio amateurs.
They are Sofía Ernestina Loray Cejas (10), Anna Luz Juárez (11), Salma Irina Rojo Bulacio (11), who, together with the rest of the interested adults, successfully passed the entry level exam.
Although the regulations of the National Communications Agency (Enacom) indicate that a license can be obtained from the age of 9,  this situation has not occurred for 15 years,in the province, and even less so with four girls!
The Radioclub Santiago del Estero LU1NF  (founded 1948) has trained many radio amateurs during the past 74 years.  Dr. Eduardo Paskevicius (LU1NAF) secretary: "I have been a radio amateur since 1996, The last time I remember seeing children obtaining their license, was on the same course I did, and one of them is the current President Alvaro (Rodriguez Montesinos, LU1NA) then 13 years old, in 1996.  I know  that later there were several tests that where minors participated and today some of them are still active amateur radio operators
For me it is exciting, and hopeful that young children join in such a noble and exciting activity . This guarantees the validity of the activity over time, and the possibility that when we are older, young people will continue to grow the institution and radio activity, which we must not forget, was the first social network, before the era of globalization.”
Amateur radio in Argentina was declared an Activity of National Interest (Law No. 16,118) and operators are urged to refer to amateur radio as an "activity and not as a hobby or pastime".
"If all else fails: there is ham radio. " It is a reminder that when a disaster strikes an area and its communication infrastructures are destroyed, it is possible to regain communication thanks to radio stations and local radio amateurs.
All it takes is a radio set, an antenna and a power source to power this small infrastructure.

DANUBE DAY, HG7DANUBE   29th of June, 00:00 UT till the 29th, 23:59 UT.  (qrz.com)
each year, the 14 countries of the Danube River Basin jointly celebrate one of Europe's greatest river systems,     https://www.ha2mn.hu/danubeday.html
The Danube, one of the world's great rivers stretches for 1800 miles from a spring in the Black Forest of southern Germany near Donaueschingen to the Black Sea. It runs east through Regensburg and Passau, Germany, to Linz and Vienna, Austria and on to Bratislava, Slovakia, then continues east to Budapest, Hungary where it abruptly heads south to Mohacs, Hungary. It is then joined by the Drava and again turns in an easterly direction to Belgrade, Serbia where its volume is increased by the Sava River. It then continues east, forming the border between Romania and Bulgaria, eventually creating a massive delta which now includes parts of Russia, Romania and Bulgaria, before emptying into the Black Sea. The delta is a very important bird sanctuary and breeding ground.

Silent Keys
Nancy Bone, G7UUR, the co-founder and long-time secretary of the Angel of the North ARC became a Silent Key Thursday the 5th of May 2022. She was an RSGB (Radio Society of Great Britain) Deputy Regional Manager for a number of years, a repeater licence holder, exam tutor and GB2RS news reader. In everything that she did, she approached it with enthusiasm and commitment that challenged and inspired others.  Nancy, a stalwart lady, had trained as a solicitor and dedicated her life to help the neglected, the abused and the underprivileged.
We are thinking of her husband Warren, G7MWB, their family and many friends at this difficult time.
