On April 15, 2024, the Cosmo Women's Amateur Radio Club handed over the satellite "Emma" to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). “Emma” was launched from the United States on a SpaceX rocket, Falcon 8, at 5:00 a.m. Japan time. on Sunday, August 5, 2024. and transported to the International Space Station (ISS), and then released from the ISS to carry out three missions.
This female-led space community went from having no prior experience to successfully launching a satellite, The satellite has been the product of four years of hard work and the Cosmo Girls members, who had worked on the project, watched the launch in the US . It was also streamed online, so the experience could be shared with lots of people.

The Cosmo Women's Amateur Radio Club is an organization that was established as a space community primarily made up of women who want to work in the space industry. They became independent as the "Cosmo Women's Amateur Radio Club" and got fully underway in May 2022.
Women with no experience in space development are taking the lead in launching satellites with the hope of conveying that "space is not out of reach, and that anyone can take on the challenge."
The Cosmo Women's Amateur Radio Club is made up of members with a variety of back-grounds, from junior high school students to people in their 60s, regardless of gender, experience, or expertise.
Although they were faced with a difficult COVID situation, they quickly changed their attitude and held the second study session online. Participants gathered from all over the country, and members steadily increased.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were unable to procure necessary parts and the production of the satellite itself was delayed. The group had the painful experience of hard-working members dropping out because they could not balance their work with their company jobs, and house-wives quitting due to their husbands' objections.
The scale of activities became too large for a single Cosmo Girls project, so an organization called the "Cosmo Girls Amateur Radio Club" launched. A team specializing in launching satellites was born.
Looking back, it's amazing to think that they even decided to launch a satellite without knowing about the many steps needed to launch a satellite. Starting with deciding on the mission, applying for a frequency band to communicate with the satellite, safety inspections for the satellite, and setting up a ground station. Although they felt overwhelmed by the ever-increasing number of procedures, thanks to the experts who accompanied them, preparations for the satellite made progress little by little.
It was a difficult time for a few years, but after the ground station was completed, they had a place where they could all gather and work, so it became a little easier and all the procedures were finally completed in March 2024..png)

Space development is driven by companies and universities with cutting-edge technology, and there are few examples of communities taking the initiative in launching artificial satellites, not only in Japan but also around the world. This is the first time in Japan that a private community, especially one comprised mainly of inexperienced women, has launched an artificial satellite.
This satellite is filled with the thoughts and efforts of Cosmo Girls. They hope that the launch of 'Emma' will help many people realize the possibilities of space.
For the future, the group hopes to have at least one Cosmo Girl in every space-related company.
It is said that women make up less than 20% of the space industry. Through the activities of Cosmo Girls, they hope to increase the number of women who are active in the space industry.
The Emma satellite
The Emma satellite is a palm-sized satellite known as a CubeSat, with a mass of approximately 1 kg and a cube with each side measuring approximately 10 cm.
The name Emma comes from "Ema," a votive tablet on which wishes are written and dedicated to Japanese shrines.
The Emma satellite has three main missions.

Using the data sent by Emma, fortunes can be read just like you would at a shrine. You can check the results of the lottery on the Cosmo Women's Amateur Radio Club's homepage.
Amateur radio operators can also receive and analyze the data.
Emma will capture images of Earth from space and send them back to Earth.

NX1P Paula, arrives in the Marquesas Islands
NX1P Paula, has been active recently (17 & 20 CW) from Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands (OC-027) as FO/NX1P. She left North America earlier this year sailing her yacht “Estrella” across the Pacific Ocean and she has just landed ashore.
She says: Since September 25th 2024, I have been back on dry land for a few days. I have managed to rent a car and I operate my equipment from Hiva Oa for a few hours a day with my wire antenna submerged in the vegetation. I can hear fairly well, but few people can hear me.
On September 25 I will be hauling out the yacht and be on the hard (land). At that time, I will attempt to run from terra firma, on the boat, on the hard, which is recognized as running from land. She has also set up her home station (Oregan. USA) so she can operate remotely through the internet.

Germany "Open the doors for the mouse" Day

For decades, the “Sendung mit der Maus” (The Show with the Mouse) has been a popular program for young and old alike, with funny and factual stories, in which the focus is primarily on explanatory videos for children.
It has been broadcast on Sunday mornings since 1971. The show is produced byWDR (Westdeutscher Rundfunk, West German Broadcaster)
Sound effects and music form the background for the films in which the mouse and his friends interact and solve problems. The characters have no names and do not speak.
On July 10, 2011, the first "Open the doors for the mouse" Day was held across Germany to mark the mouse's 40th birthday. Since 2012, it has always taken place on October 3.
Every year, mouse fans all over Germany open doors behind which something interesting is hidden. Who doesn't like to do that - open doors that are otherwise closed to discover something unknown?
This is the opportunity offered by the "Open doors with the mouse" day. Companies, authorities, research centers, cultural facilities, institutions, clubs and many others give mouse fans an insight into their working environment.
The theme "Valuable Treasures" means that young people can experience the fascination of things that are not so obvious in everyday life.
Amateur radio stations nation-wide take part in Mouse Day. Children can gain an insight into amateur radio and discover valuable treasures. For example, you can experience how radio contacts are made all over the world, even via satellite.
The Eschborn radio amateurs were packed. The clubhouse was full of radio and Morse code and many children dared to speak in front of the microphone. The mouse was also brave, as you can see.

Everyone probably knows the orange cartoon mouse from WDR television. It has been the main character in the children's show "The Show with the Mouse" since 1971. The mouse not only imparts knowledge on television, but also in real life.
On October 3rd, everything about the mouse revolves around "exciting connections", because these play a role everywhere in life: in business and in private life, in small and large things, in traffic or communication - the latter in particular is one of the strengths of radio amateurs. We want to show how we create connections between people all over the world by explaining and practically demonstrating radio-telephone, touch radio and digital radio. This is a good opportunity to present our hobby.

LU7JKB Dr. Marta Emma Sinner, died on the eve 31 August, 2024, at the age of 70.
In 1992, when Eduardo Germán Reynoso LU1JDG gave a course for candidates with the purpose of founding a radio club in Gualeguay, the fifth largest city in the province of Entre Ríos, Marta, along with her husband Hugo Benito Leiva LU9JDT, both veterinarians, were part of the fifty registered members who received their license months later.
The following year, both Marta and Hugo, already novices, participated in the assembly that founded the Gualeguay Radio Club with the sponsorship of the San Nicolás Radio Club. On that occasion, all the attendees were named founding members. During that same year, 1993, when the Radio Club received its LU2JP license, it was Marta Sinner who designed the institution's logo, which features a white dove.
Some time later, her husband Hugo Leiva LU9JDT became president of the Gualeguay Radio Club and she joined the board of directors.
Marta Sinner will be remembered as one of the first female radio amateurs in Gualeguay.
ZS6HL Hilda Lange, became a silent key 31 August 2024.
She was a long time member of the Pretoria Amateur Radio Club, South Africa. Together with her husband Tinus Lange ZS6TL (S/k) they were very supportive of local car rallies with radio communications; also club activities and were part of the Pretoria Branch of the SARL and HAMNET Northern. KA3VXR Barb Bender, [August 28, 1937- September 24, 2024]
Barb (age 87) died at Maple Heights assisted living facility, Ebensburg surrounded by her loving family.
Licensed since 1990. She was a VE and a member of YLRL since 1994; and the YLRL.s 3rd District Chairwoman. She acted as Amateur Radio Emergency Coordinator for Cambria County for 10 years; belonging to 3 local clubs and a National Club, as well as Australian (ALARA), British (BYLARA), Canadian (CLARA) and Japanese (JLRS) National Clubs.
Barb and OM Dick Bender W3SYY, celebrated their 41st wedding Anniversary last Sept 25, 2023. Barb celebrated her 87 birthday on 28 Aug 2024.
She loved travel and adventure. She visited many US states and European countries, She loved camping with the family, painting and other crafts with the Grand and Great-grand-kids. She found great joy in hosting huge family Holiday dinners and passing along Lithuanian and Ukrainian foods and customs.
