ZU6RK Rebekah by Irvine Green ZS6BPE
Irvine Green ZS6BPE the AR-YTT editor, asked dad, Warren. ZS6WAR... if Rebekah could write a few lines for AR-YTT readers, telling of her interest in ham radio.. getting her licence.. what she enjoys about ham radio.. etc. Rebekah managed to find time and answered as follows...
“ My name is Rebekah (ZU6RK). I live in Secunda. I was still 8 years old when I got my license earlier this year. My dad (ZS6WAR) is a radio amateur so I wanted to become one too. I took the RAE test on 18 May 2024.
I like competing in competitions. My first and also my favourite competition was the Hammies QSO party. I also won 2nd place in the ' ARRL Youth Sprint competition ' for which I also received a certificate. I enjoy contests and look forward to competing in more competitions.
My current radio is my fathers old ICOM IC-728 using an end fed antenna. I hope there will be more competitions soon. 73 “
Thank you Rebekah for your reply. Most interesting and insightful. Here's to many more happy and memorable QSO's world wide as your ham radio life continues..
Irvine Green ZS6BPE asked Rebekah's dad Warren (ZS6WAR) to update him and his readers about the restricted beginners amateur radio licence.
Warren replied as follows: “ The ZU licence is a ' Class B ' licence limited to the 40 meter band.. and certain frequencies on 10 meters... 28.050 MHz to 28,150 MHz and 28.300 MHz to 28,500 MHz. Maximum power allowed is 100 Watts. “
Just a side note from the AR-YTT editor. Though the ' SA Women's Radio Club ' no longer exists, its newsletter ' YL Beam ' has been resurrected by Heather ZS6YE – I am sure the SAWRC founder – in 1953 - (my mom, Diana Green ZS6GH, silent key in 1997) would without hesitation award Rebekah ' honorary life membership ' of the SAWRC for her excellent achievement at age 8.

ZU6RK Rebekah during her RAE- HF assessment with Dad Warren - ZS6WAR - watching from ' his shack ' a few metres behind her. Rebekah can now be heard on 40 metres. If you hear a ZU prefix and female voice don't assume it's a ' pirate '.. it's Rebekah and she'd love getting your QSL card.

Editorial Heather ZS5YH:
In October I wrote to an OM who runs a Scout Group in Bisho, Eastern Cape, S Africa:
I wonder how your JOTA event went? It has been interesting to see how different cultures embrace Scouts & Guides. I hope you will write about your JOTA group, with pictures and send them to Radio ZS. I would especially like to hear about the girls for the yl newsletter, with pictures. Thank you for leading these young people into the future. 73 Heather ZS5YH
His reply below gives a different view on social media! Not only do we want to inspire young people but we have a duty of care as well, especially as December is YOTA month (Youngsters-on-the-Air).
Lunga Nqini 21 Oct 2024, Good Day Ma'am
Thank you for your support, basically we were stopped by our parents to post our activities on FB esp when we have lots of girls. 4 girls were kidnapped here locally a Facebook stalker followed them; ended up it's a thug.
So my parents requested not to post anything until this is sorted. But we had an awesome time with my Little ones. Thank you once more Ma'am!
Yours in Service, Passionate Radio Operator Rhino ZS2LN Lunga Nqini
Welcome & Congratulations to New South African Yls

Contest Daughter: Juliana PU5JDA (Brasil)
Learn from the Best
Juliana Almeida, PU5JDA, is a young and talented Brazilian radio amateur who is already leaving her mark in the world of radio amateurism. Graduated at only 10 years of age, she was introduced to the hobby by her father, Sergio PP5JR, a well-known competitor in Brazil. Juliana has since followed in her footsteps, developing a passion for competition and honing her skills through competitions, where she learned that "with focus and determination, you can win anything in life" — a lesson instilled by her father that shaped her approach to radio and her future.
Besides her success in contests, Juliana is also pursuing a career in medicine, just like her father. Despite her young age, she has spoken at major radio amateur conventions, including the world-renowned Dayton Hamvention, where she addressed how to engage more young people in the hobby.
This conversation delves into Juliana's motivations, lessons learned from her family, and her act of balancing school, radio love, and her medical ambitions. Tune in to hear her unique story. Portuguese adaptation: Peter PY5CC, Araucaria DX Group. 1 Oct 2024

Japanese Radio Picnic
In JLRS Area 1, we regularly hold a "Handheld Radio Picnic" where we learn how to use a handheld radio and try to send radio waves from a park with a good view. This time, we will share the impressions of a new JLRS member who participated for the first time earlier this month (written by JL1ANY).
I received my radio station license in May of this year (2024) and prepared a handheld radio, but I had never sent radio waves with my own hand-held radio before.I heard that JLRS was holding a "Handheld Radio Picnic," so I took my daughter, who is in the fourth grade of elementary school, to participate. At the picnic, we were carefully taught how to actually operate a handheld radio. It 's a high hurdle to communicate on your own, but I was able to communicate while being told what to say by someone next to me, so it was reassuring.I communicated with six stations in about 30 minutes, and my daughter was also able to communicate with four stations. Both my daughter and I gained confidence in communication through this "Handheld Radio Picnic."
The JL1ANY station on the far left. Please also check out our website. https://www.jarl.com/jlrs/ We are looking for members!

FO/NX1P, Paula (from USA) currently on Marquesas Islands: Monday, November 25, 2024
I activated Marquesas from the island of Hiva Oa. I found a high spot on the volcano that looked north and out to the Pacific. My original plan was to operate at 10 meters for as many hours as possible. However, I didn’t have a place to stay, not even a tent. That meant setting up and taking down each day, returning to my boat, and then doing it all again on Saturday. I was too exhausted to be active on Sunday. Basically two expeditions!
The operating conditions of the station were not much better. I had to operate from the back seat of a small Suzuki Jimmy 4x4 with my laptop on my lap. My expedition telegraph key was magnetically attached to the top of my IC7300. Total installation took 30 minutes and 20 minutes to disassemble.
The results were unexpectedly good. On Friday, the 10m were "on fire". On Saturday, the signals were not good, but there was no noise, so I was able to use preamps. I operated a total of 8 hours. 2 hours on Friday, as I started late, and 6 hours on Saturday. Except for the last hour on Friday, I had a continuous pile up. Since it was a contest, I could not operate in split mode, so I had to repeat the callsigns of the callers many times to get through the pile up. I worked with 620 contacts, 23 areas and 36 countries.
This was a low power operation. Searching and attacking from my location was not really an option. Except for 3 contacts, I was on operating frequency.
The record was submitted and contacts were uploaded to LOTW.

Grimeton Radio Station (Sweden) SAQ 100 years on December 1st, 2024
A hundred years ago, on December 1st, 1924, the long wave transmitter at Grimeton Radio Station, with the call sign SAQ, was put into commercial operation, with transmissions across the Atlantic ocean, to the receiving station at Riverhead and the replying transmitter station at Rocky Point, both on Long Island, NY, USA.
While all the other transmitting and receiving stations in the RCA network are long gone, the design and manufacturing of such a robust and reliable radio transmitter was a monumental achievement by the Swedish-born inventor Ernst F.W. Alexanderson. Thank you Ernst! https://alexander.n.se/en/alexanderson-day-2024/
On Christmas Eve morning, December 24th, SAQ Grimeton is scheduled to be on the air, to send out the traditional Christmas message to the whole world, using the 200kW Alexanderson alternator from 1924, on 17.2 kHz CW.
Located in southern Sweden, is an early longwave transatlantic wireless telegraphy station built in 1922–1924,. From the 1920s through the 1940s it was used to transmit telegram traffic by Morse code to North America and other countries, and during World War II was Sweden's only telecommunication link with the rest of the world. It is the only remaining example of an early pre-electronic radio transmitter technology called an Alexanderson alternator. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004,
